Ski Trips and Puppet Shows
This morning I was getting 8 year old Aleks up and ready for school. I was helping him put on his shirt and trying to wake him up with conversation. No little boy wants to get up when the clock hasn't even struck 6AM yet. The shirt I was putting on Aleks said "Ski" and had a picture of a man skiing on it. I asked Aleks, "What is skiing?", Aleks sat there just staring at me. So I started to explain how when you ski you get to slide down a mountain covered in snow. My mind went to my last skiing experience seven years ago (man, time is starting to pick up pace!). Aleks' response was "Yay! Snow!" Then Aleks asked me in a fragmented sentence caused by his Downs Syndrome, "Heather, road trip?". I asked him, "You want to go on a road trip? Where do you want to go?" Thinking that his answer was going to be the mountains. Aleks answered in an exclamation, "PUPPET SHOW!" ...Puppet show? How we got from skiing to puppet show, I have no idea but it made me laugh. I told him that one day I would take him on a road trip to a puppet show (it is a little easier than a trek to West Virginia or Colorado!). He bounced up and down and clapped his hands and shouted "Yay!"
