late night conversation

Last night I was tucking 8 year old Markus into bed. Sometimes it takes a little while to get this boy to go to sleep because he is so full of questions!

Markus: What time will mom be home?
Me: She should be home by midnight, buddy.
Markus: What if I wake up at eleven with a cough or what if I need something?
Me: Then I will be here to help you. My job is to do the best I possibly can to take care of you and make sure you are well, so you don't need to worry. I will take care of you if you need me to.
Markus: Ok....You get to meet M (step-grandmother) tonight!
Me: I know! I can't wait! Do you like her?
Markus: Yes! She is like you.
Me: Like me?
Markus: She has the same way of doing things like you do. She is nice and asks nice questions and is there to comfort. She has a kind heart like you do.
Me (in my head): This just made my whole month. This boy I love, can see how much I love him!
Me (out loud): Markus, that is so sweet of you to say! Thank you buddy! I love you and I can't wait to meet M.
Markus: Tell me what you think of her.
Me: I will tell you exactly what I think of her.
Markus: Goodnight Heather.
Me: Goodnight buddy.

It's the little moments...

  1. Heather, this is such a sweet conversation. Thank you for posting it. You are such a wonderful nanny and encourager to those boys. I'm glad they recognize what a special person you are. :-) I love you.
